Masayoshi sketched birds and animals using a ‘simplified’ drawing style in a picture book entitled Chōjū Ryakuga Shiki (i.e., Drawing Birds and Animals in a Simplified Style). Published in 1797, it included the nineteen pages of birds shown in this gallery. Click on a picture to enlarge it. Bird shapes were outlined using smooth curves and the outline was filled with one or more colors. While far from accurate, the shape and colors were usually sufficient for species identification.
